The Cost of a Cantilever
Clients often ask why a seemingly small cantilever changes the structural cost so disproportionately. House 17's roof plane became the case study we now use to answer that question honestly.
The nine-hundred-millimetre overhang required a 40mm increase in slab depth across the entire bay, not just at the edge — the load path runs the full span back to the nearest column.
We now model this trade-off explicitly at the concept stage, so a client is choosing a cantilever with its real cost attached, not discovering it during tender.
